The Globe and Mail is Canada's national newspaper in the way that, perhaps, the New York Times is read throughout the States to represent a national and regional perspective on important issues of the day.
The Globe's political "endorsement" of Conservative (read: Republican) leader Stephen Harper in our upcoming (Oct. 14/08) election surprised and confounded many Canadians. Although we are told that newspaper endorsements are 'nothing new', I cannot remember a time when a broad media (such as the Globe and Mail) has made such a direct declaration.
I expect bi-partisan, fair and well-researched explanations of the political party's platforms and policies and past performances, not a recommendation from the publication for the voting public. Does this mean all "Globe and Mail" journalists "endorse" the Conservative Party of Canada? Will they stop putting ads in their paper supporting Stephane Dion (leader of the Liberal (read: Democrat) party) or is the money too lucrative to go that far. Will the subtly deride or choose not to print alternative representation and responses to our financial crisis and country leadership?
I truly am shocked by this and dismayed. I am now suspect as to the nature of columns, reports and articles from this news media and will no longer consider it a sound news source for accurate and unbiased reporting.
Shame on you, Globe and Mail.
